Friday 29th January 2010

The Torbay 24 Hour Challenge

SURF  OFF  SCOTLAND

The Challenge was completed at one minute past 11 pm on Friday 29th January when the team arrived safely at the Boat House. The team travelled 975 miles and each learnt to surf and then all rode the waves a number of times before returning home. The project was completed in 23 hours precisely. We are very grateful for all the donations and sponsorship. The total raised will be updated early next week but we are confident it has gone above the target of £3000 - thank you for your support.

The Challenge Six of the Crew will depart from Torbay Lifeboat Station at 00:01 on Friday 29th January - RNLI SOS Day - and drive to the East Coast of Scotland in a sponsored car using sponsored fuel.

On arrival at Pease Bay (Near Cockburnspath) the six will receive a sponsored surfing lesson from 'Clan Surf Adventures' - a Glasgow based company.  Pease Bay is approximately 34 miles due East of Edinburgh. Their website is  www.clanskates.co.uk  (Note nearer the date the actual location will be selected and could be on either the West or East Coast - we will let you know.)

The shortest route from the station is 480 miles - Route Planners suggest a non stop drive time of 8 hours 30 minutes so you can see that with 'stops' the challenge is real!

Following the lesson the six must surf on a wave before leaving - the challenge to each is 'Surf Off Scotland'.

Having achieved an individual and unsupported surf the six will return home aiming to arrive before midnight on the same day the 29th January. Forfeits may be included if the Challenge fails.

Sponsorship Sponsors for the main elements of the Challenge so far are as follows:
William Hill (Brixham) Chief Hire - The Eight Seater
Richwood Hotel, (Torquay) Millgate Motors (Paignton) - The Fuel
Paignton Regatta Committee (and Paignton Sailing Club)

Yourselves - The  'Justgiving' Site is ready and waiting for you! www.justgiving.com/surfoffscotland

Crew members will be around with 'Sponsorship Forms' - will you help make SOS Day a Great Success?

Or telephone the Boat House on 01803 853136 and mention 'Surf Off Scotland'

Communications Stay in touch during the challenge on http://twitter.com/RNLITorbay

It is hoped that Heart FM will be reporting regularly during the twenty four hours.
