Sunday 18th August 2002 The Dedication and Naming of the Torbay Lifeboat The day started with mist and steady rain - but the forecast was for a fine afternoon. Pessimists prepared for a wet day - rolls of kitchen towel to wipe seats dry, awning borrowed to cover the dais, umbrellas commandeered to keep a few guests dry. The station team assembled from 08:00 and by mid morning the whole site had been laid out, flags and pennants hoisted, marquee constructed and hot sausage rolls brought for all to partake. By 13:00 the sun appeared, the temperature rose - perfect! Guests arrived from 12:30 and all went to plan. The photographs that follow have been made available by Steve Simons one of the crew.
Some 350 attended to observe the formal acceptance of the new boat into the RNLI by Sir Robin Knox Johnson from Mrs Rosemary Lee on behalf of the donors. Mrs Lee was carer to Mrs Dykes after whom the boat was named 'RNLB Alec and Christina Dykes'. There were many donors and the major donations are recognised on a plaque mounted in the wheel house. The service of dedication was led by Superintendent Clifford Powell of the Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen who is the Station Chaplain. The Mayor of Torbay Councillor Heather Buckpitt performed the naming ceremony and 'launched' the boat with champagne. A good time was had by all! |
