Coastal Safety

Although our lifeboat crews and lifeguards save hundreds of lives, there are still around 170 lives lost around the UK coast every year. While we need to stay focussed on the core lifesaving service, we want to reduce this statistic by building on our preventative work that protects countless lives each year.

We had over 100 ` shouts ’in 2016 which were split almost 50:50 between boats and people. Mechanical failure and cut off by the tide were by far the highest causes.

We are available to talk about/advise on any coastal safety matter including coming aboard your boat and advising on safety equipment.  (free of any charge!)

Our aim is to halve the number of coastal fatalities by 2024

Our Respect the Water campaign is developing year on year with messages being focussed on the unpredictability of the sea, the dangers of cold water shock, many people who drown have had no intention of going into the sea and what to do if you fall in and are in difficulty.

One of our slogans is` We cannot save everybody'

We need to talk directly to those most at risk. If we look at all the local information available we can target specific groups, participating in their favourite coastal activities, with a behaviour-change message that can save lives e.g. encourage those who fish from rocks to wear a lifejacket.

In 2016 we introduced a community lifesaving plan specific to Torbay which we believe will assist in reducing the number of incidents and fatalities. We will do this through targeted accident reduction initiatives and emergency response.

For Boating of all types and most coastal activities in Torbay:

please remember the key safety messages opposite which apply to a greater or lesser extent to all water-based activities

  • Wear a properly fitted and checked lifejacket

  • Get trained

  • Carry a means of calling for help

  • Check the weather and tides

  • Ensure your engine is well maintained; carry appropriate spares and tools, and sufficient fuel for your trip

  • Tell someone ashore where you are going so they can call for help if you do not return

  For Coastal Activities
  • Wear a lifejacket when fishing from rocks
  • Do NOT get cut off by the rising tide when on rocks/headlands
  • Do not let your dog off the lead on cliff paths and if the worst happens ring 999. Do not seek to rescue yourself

  • Do not use inflatables in off shore wind conditions.
